Photo Compositing & Digital Retouching

Background/Context

Role: Digital Artist & Retouching Specialist
Tools Used: Photoshop, Lightroom Classic
Company: Omega Photo

Overview

This project was a time-sensitive compositing request that required combining elements from two separate photographs into a single, cohesive image. The goal was to add the couple standing in the background (right image) into the left image, while maintaining natural depth, lighting, and realism.

Process

Planning and Initial Compositing

I was provided with two original images and given a two-hour time limit to complete the composite. Before beginning any edits, I took time to plan the workflow and think through the most efficient approach.

I started by masking the couple from the right image and placing them into the left image. Initially, I considered erasing overlapping areas to push the couple further into the background, but I realized a better solution would preserve realism.

Instead, I masked the five people in the foreground and placed them on a separate layer on top of the couple layer. This allowed the couple to naturally sit behind the group without awkward overlaps and gave the final composition a more believable sense of depth.

Refinement and Generative Fill

Once placement was complete, I used generative fill to rebuild missing areas at the bottom of the couple where the original image did not include enough detail. I also added shadows to help ground them in the scene and make them feel like a natural part of the photo.

The most time-consuming challenge was generating a realistic shoe for the woman, as the original image did not include her full footwear. Generative fill initially produced a purple shoe, and by that point I had reached the two-hour limit. I provided the client with a proof of the composite as it stood.

Client Feedback and Final Adjustments

The client was very happy with the overall composite but requested that the shoe be white instead of purple. I requested an additional thirty minutes to complete the revision in case generative fill continued to be inconsistent. Once the extra time was approved, I was able to successfully generate a white shoe and finalize the composite.

Results and Reflection

The client received a polished digital composite and was very happy with the final result. This project highlights my ability to think critically under time constraints, adapt my approach mid-process, and communicate clearly with both clients and internal teams to deliver a successful outcome.

It also reinforced the importance of flexibility and creative problem-solving when working with advanced tools like generative fill, especially on tight deadlines.
