Generational Photo Composite & Print Layout

Background/Context

Role: Digital Artist & Retouching Specialist
Tools Used: Photoshop, Lightroom Classic
Company: Omega Photo

Overview

This project was a meaningful compositing and print request centered around family history. The client shared photos connected to a church that held significance across generations. One image featured the client’s uncle visiting the church many years ago, and two additional images showed the client’s son visiting the same church in present day.

The goal was to visually connect the two generations by creating a cohesive final print that honored both moments.

Process

Planning and Image Selection

The client provided three images: one photo of the uncle in the church and two photos of the son taken during his visit.

The client asked for two things: first, to merge the two images of his son so that the son appeared centered within the church windows, and second, to present both the uncle’s image and the son’s image side by side in a single 8×10 print.

Background Cleanup and Compositing

To begin, I selected the image where the church windows were most centered and removed all people from the scene. This required reconstructing parts of the stairs and railing so the background felt natural and uninterrupted. Once the background was complete, I masked the son from the second image and placed him into the centered window composition.

Layout and Print Preparation

After completing the composite of the son, I moved on to preparing the final layout. I proportionally cropped the black and white image of the uncle and adjusted both images to 8×5 dimensions so they would fit cleanly side by side within an 8×10 canvas.

I then placed both images onto the final 8×10 layout, ensuring balance and visual harmony between the two photographs.

Final

Results and Reflection

The final piece created a meaningful visual connection between two generations experiencing the same place years apart. The client was very happy with the result and ordered an 8×10 print to frame at home.

This project highlights my ability to work thoughtfully with sentimental material, reconstruct complex backgrounds, and design print layouts that tell a story while maintaining technical accuracy.
