Film Restoration & Canvas Reprint

Background/Context

Role: Digital Artist & Retouching Specialist
Tools Used: Epson V700, Photoshop, Lightroom Classic, Epson P9000, Stretcher Bars
Company: Omega Photo

Overview

A client came into Omega Photo looking to refresh a cherished image originally printed years ago as a canvas wrap. She brought in the original canvas for reference, but over time the colors had faded and no longer reflected the image the way she remembered it. Her goal was to rescan the original 120 film negative, restore the image, and reprint it as a new canvas wrap with improved color and clarity.

Because the client was on a tight schedule, the initial restoration and color correction needed to be completed within a short time window before moving forward.

Process

Film Scanning and Initial Restoration

I collaborated with my team to scan the client’s 120 film negative and prepare it for editing. The scan contained significant dust and noticeable color bleeding, which made the restoration more challenging within the allotted time.

I focused on correcting color balance, reducing color bleed, and cleaning up dust artifacts while preserving the original character of the image. After fifteen minutes of retouching, I produced a test strip so the client could review the initial results.

Client Feedback and Revisions

After reviewing the test strip in person, the client requested warmer tones in the wedding dress and overall reduced color saturation. Based on this feedback, I requested an additional ten minutes of retouching time to refine the image further.

I made the requested adjustments and printed a second test strip for approval. Once the client was happy with the updated version, we moved forward with final production.

Results and Reflection

After final approval, the image was printed on Cezanne canvas, wrapped, and finished by our production team. The client received the completed canvas along with a digital copy of the restored image. She was extremely happy with the final result and appreciated the care taken to refresh such a meaningful photograph.

This project highlights my ability to work efficiently under time constraints, collaborate closely with teammates, and adapt quickly to client feedback while maintaining image quality. It also reinforced how thoughtful restoration and color correction can bring new life to archival images.
