Portrait Color Restoration & Print Production

Background/Context

Role: Digital Artist & Retouching Specialist
Tools Used: Epson V700, Photoshop, Lightroom Classic
Company: Omega Photo

Overview

This project was a color restoration and print production request for a vintage portrait of a police officer. I worked on the project from scanning through final print, ensuring the image was restored accurately and printed to the client’s requested size.

Process

Scanning and Initial Assessment

I began by scanning the original photograph to evaluate the condition of the image. The photo was quite old and had developed a noticeable blue color cast over time. The cast was uneven around the edges, which indicated the photo had previously been displayed in a frame and had aged inconsistently.

Color Restoration

With a limited retouching window of five minutes, I focused on removing the blue cast and restoring the photo to its original color balance. The goal was to preserve the integrity of the portrait while bringing back warmth and clarity without over-correcting the image.

Print Preparation and Production

Once the color correction was complete, I resized the image to fit a 5×7 print, making sure the composition and resolution were appropriate for printing. I then coordinated with the photo lab technician, who manages the specific printer used for this job, to ensure the final print would come out accurately and consistently.

Results and Reflection

The final print successfully restored the portrait’s original tones and preserved the character of the photograph. This project highlights my ability to work efficiently within time constraints, make precise color correction decisions, and collaborate with production specialists to deliver a high-quality printed result.
