Family Photo Composite & Retouching

Background/Context

Role: Head Digital Artist & Retouching Specialist
Tools Used: Photoshop, Lightroom Classic
Company: Omega Photo

Overview

This project was a full compositing and retouching request that I handled from start to finish, including direct communication with the client. The client provided two separate photos and wanted them combined into one final image that included the entire family, a St. Francis statue positioned in the bottom right, and hydrangeas in the bottom left.

Process

Planning the Composite

Before beginning any edits, I reviewed both images to decide which would work best as the base for the composite. I chose the photo where the hydrangeas and the statue were already clearly visible, since I find it more effective to composite people into an environment rather than reconstruct objects and backgrounds.

To prepare the image, I removed all existing people from the base photo so I could start with a clean background. This allowed me to place the family naturally without visual distractions or overlap issues.

Compositing and Placement

I then masked and transferred the family from the second photo into the base image, carefully resizing and positioning everyone so they fit naturally on the balcony. I made sure to bring over all necessary details and adjust proportions so the group felt balanced within the scene.

Once the initial composite was complete, I sent an email proof to the client for review.

Client Feedback and Final Touches

After reviewing the proof, the client requested a few finishing touches, including whitening everyone’s teeth, brightening their eyes, and adjusting shadows for better consistency. I made the requested refinements and shared the updated image for final approval.

Results and Reflection

The client was very happy with the final result and expressed appreciation for the attention to detail and communication throughout the process. She even asked if I would still be working there the following year, as she returns annually, which was a meaningful compliment.

This project highlights my ability to manage a project independently, make strategic compositing decisions, and work directly with clients to refine details until the final image feels complete and polished.
